Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox’s Sean Hannity Tuesday night that the efforts from the Select Committee on Benghazi could be linked to Hillary Clinton’s decreasing poll numbers. The Briefing, an arm of the Clinton campaign, saw this as an opportunity.

“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee – a select committee,” McCarthy told Fox.

“What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable,” McCarthy continued.

Shortly after the interview, The Briefing’s (very) rapid response team cut this video, treating McCarthy’s statement as further evidence that “the real motive behind the Benghazi committee” is a “taxpayer-funded, partisan attack on Hillary Clinton.”

Hillary Clinton is slated to testify before the committee Oct. 22.
