With Donald Trump's promise to "build a wall" animating the Republican grassroots, it's not enough to just oppose relaxed immigration rules. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is hoping to strike a conservative chord by simultaneously attacking illegal immigration and the mainstream media.

The ad "Invasion" depicts people trying to illegally enter America. It's shot like a movie trailer, with wide-angle shots, slow-motion footage and a pounding score. But we don't see impoverished day laborers trying to cross the border. We see professionals wearing suits and high heels, running through the desert and slogging through a river.

Cruz Imagines Journalists Running From The Border Patrol

Laid over the scene are Cruz's comments from a previous debate, in which he said:

“I understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn’t often see it as an economic issue. But I can tell you, it is a very personal economic issue."

As viewers still wonder why they are seeing people hold their briefcases over the heads to keep them dry, Cruz delivers his punch line:

"And I will say the politics of it would be very, very, different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Rio Grande, or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press. Then we would see stories about the economic calamity that is befalling our nation.”

Ted Cruz Slyly Knocks Marco Rubio

The music fades, giving Cruz's final words more emphasis. We see him on the debate stage, cheekily juxtaposed with Sen. Marco Rubio who was previously on the same side as President Obama regarding immigration. Cruz declares, "If I'm elected president, we will triple the border patrol. We will build a wall that works. We will secure the border."

Donald Trump may have injected immigration into the Republican primary, but Cruz believes he will be the one who will reap the benefits.
